Third generation Cockle Valley Barber Shop in Puyallup, WA, with railroad tracks behind and Main Street sign out front

It looked like time stopped decades ago at Cockle's Valley Barber Shop on Main Street in Puyallup, a town located in the shadow of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest. Oldies played on the vintage radio. An industrial style fan wobbled while its blades whirled and pinged. A sixteen pound pike on the wall presided over locals who brought their children for haircuts, and afterward the kids bought penny gumballs from a countertop machine. Brushes and bottles shook from the vibration of a freight train rumbling on the railroad tracks directly behind the building running parallel to the street.
